I am so excited to be performing in Hotel Fables: Episodes in a Life with my company Madison Lyric Stage I will be performing scenes from Britten, Beckett, Puccini and More Will Be Performed;
The Setting Is a Single Hotel Room Anywhere in the World
This is an original work of mine, which will explore, through music and drama, the complexities, struggles and humor of human relationships. The setting is a single room of a hotel in a nameless city anywhere in the world, where every guest who comes to stay reveals a unique set of circumstances.
The program features scenes from Benjamin Britten’s Billy Budd and The Rape of Lucretia; Saint-Saëns’ Samson et Dalila; Puccini’s Manon Lescaut; Samuel Beckett’s Play; Ronald Harwood’s The Dresser; Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana, Beethoven’s Fidelio and Korngold’s Die Tote Stadt.
As an opera singer who has spent most of his adult life in a hotel room…I have a lot of experience in this location. Taking these diverse and brilliant scenes and superimposing them into the hotel setting frees the pieces and allows for modernism to develop, and a re-examining of relationships through some true masterpieces of opera and theater world, bringing a contemporary point of view to these works.
I will be joined by six singing actors: Jacob Boergesson, Rebecca Ellis, John Johmann, Allison Lindsay, Audra Moricca and Allison Waggener, along with pianist Kelly Horsted. I conceived the evening and staged it as well.
Performance dates are Friday, November 15 and Saturday, November 16 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, November 17 at 4:00 p.m.
Performances are at the Deacon John Grave House located at 581 Boston Post Road on Academy Street in Madison. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased at madisonlyricstage.org or by calling 203-215-6329.
